So, I’m a few days behind on getting the recap blog out for May, but I’ve been man down with flu and with my real life job deadlines! May was, however, a really kick ass month and my first full one up North.
TOPS AT SPAR WINE SHOW:
On Friday 13 May, we went off to our first wine show up here in Gauteng. The Tops at Spar Wine show was held in the Sandton Convention Centre. Coming from the Cape and blogging about wine....I know the stuff. I know the regulars that are at all the shows. But this was different. There were a fair number of familiar names but there were a tonne of smaller farms that had serious quality wines on show. The range was lovely, and it's very difficult to tell you what my favorites were.
From reds that just caressed the tongue on their way past, to whites that were surprisingly bold and full of exciting flavor, the Tops at Spar Wine show was, in my opinion, one of the best wine shows that I have attended with regards to the quality of wine they had on display. What was also actually quite a nice touch, were the servers walking around with trays of TUC biscuits. There is also the wine theater which was free. You could learn about wines and this was, in my opinion a lovely touch to round off the whole wine experience.
About 2/3 of the way through we stopped for a bite to eat. At R70 each the meals were, to my surprise, very filling and were made fresh in front of us very quickly. I can tell you without a shadow of doubt that the food was up to the standard of a high quality restaurant. The break also allowed us to chill, and take a good break from the wine with a cup of coffee. Having card facilities meant no cash was needed.
This was the Jo’burg leg of the Tops at Spar Wine show and I can’t wait till the Pretoria one as I am interested to do a comparison. However, before then, there are a few other shows in Durban and PE then Pretoria and lastly, Nelspruit. If you are a wine lover, then THIS is the definitive show for you. You need to book tickets and go to the show coming to your area.
Walking out after a show, I tend to try not to spend too much on a whim ....not at this show! This show we left happily clutching a few bottles of wine and wine products! Well done to the organizers, the show was fantastic with great variety and wonderful food and was great value for money. The layout was neat and spacious and it really was a pleasure to attend.
