In mid July, Mr. Moo and I were lucky enough to get treated to a night away at Sun Square, Montecasino by charming GM, Kaliq Essop. This was a great opportunity to look at what the hotel and casino could offer for a quick night holiday within the city.
Montecasino is easy to access, close to commercial hubs and is pretty much a max of 35 mins from most of Gauteng. The room was spotless, with a queen size bed (with LOTS of super plump pillows....a must for me), a great view and a big shower. The room also came with aircon, DSTV, desk, safe, hangers and goodies to make tea or coffee. As a 3 star hotel, it met every basic need and was beautifully turned out and very comfortable. Service from every, single staff member was efficient and incredibly friendly and they made us feel like a million bucks.
At a room cost of around R1500 for a room for 2 people per night, it is actually very reasonable, especially with an all you can eat buffet breakfast at the stunning Aarya Restaurant, included for both people.
It was wonderful to be able to go for dinner at a great restaurant in the casino, go for a stroll, enjoy a bottle of wine....and then take a leisurely walk back to our hotel, stopping for a scoop of ice cream on the way. No rush, no hurry, no worry about drinking and driving, and perfectly safe at all times.
About that breakfast at Aarya... you need to go just to experience that breakfast!!!! Now I need to make a special note here. Go hungry. Aarya is a fantastic place to have dinner with well priced EXCELLENT food that you just want to eat till you burst...but the breakfast spread they put on for the hotel guests is something that took my breath away.
Fresh, bright, delicious, with everything executed by the nicest, friendliest staff that I have ever met at 7am on a Sunday morning! The photos I took, while really lovely, don’t even do the food freshness and quality any justice.
We loved staying at the Tsogo Sun Square Hotel. From the doorman to the lady that came to assist with the air-conditioning unit during the evening, we were treated with the utmost care and respect. Yes, R1500 is something most of us can’t do EVERY month, but for a quick urban retreat that you don’t need to drive hours to and where your car is safe and you have some amazing restaurants on your doorstep, just to get away with your significant other now and then....it is definitely the way to go every now and then to take a break or 3 during your year.
If you keep an eye on the Montecasino site, time your visit for when an event is happening (we went to watch the Bulls game in the outdoor arena on Saturday and to the Chocolate and Wine festival on the Sunday).
But the very best thing about the hotel and staff is that while it may be a 3 star hotel, the service to customers is 100%, 5 star!
The night at Sun Square was sponsored by the hotel. Staff of the hotel and restaurant were not aware of this, and all experiences were what a normal guest would have. Thank you to GM, Kaliq Essop.
Two shows currently touring SA are The Power of Poison and The Terracotta Army and the first Emperor of China. Both are being done through expoRSA exhibitions/events, so we decided to go see what all the fuss was about and see both of them while they are at Silverstar Casino in Krugersdorp.
If you are considering seeing either of these, then let me say I HIGHLY recommend doing so...and in fact suggest that you see both of them if possible. You definitely get value for money and both adults and children will enjoy both.
These are two exhibits to go and spend time at just being amazed.
Tickets are available from Webtickets and the shows move next to Centurion Mall, and then down to Cape Town. I cannot recommend enough that you go and see both of these exhibits. They are completely different but oh so interesting.
Thank you to ExpoRSA for the passes to both exhibts.
Set up with dim lights and a creepy atmosphere, we were instantly transported into the world of poisons.
This is ideal for teaching both young and old, how poisons work and famous people of poison stories. From Alice in Wonderland to Cleopatra, you explore a world of bugs and plants that need to be avoided and respected. We LOVED this exhibit and found it incredibly interesting and lost time while exploring it. Well worth going to see.
This exhibit is MAGNIFICENT...there is no other word.
Discover Ancient China’s greatest army of over 300 life-sized clay models of the greatest warriors in history.
Life size replicas and fascinating facts take you back to BC China. From the foot soldiers to the horses, this show is breathtaking. It may be a little over the head of very little children, but it definitely will be fascinating to young and old. This is one of those exhibits where you will be completely fascinated in what you see and WILL walk out going "I did NOT know that"
You need to go and take the opportunity to see this one of a kind exhibit.
So one of my greatest sadness's about the move up to Gauteng from Cape Town, was losing my beloved local burger joint, Easy Tiger Burger Bar. I should not have worried! On one of our date nights, Mr Moo surprised me by taking me to a place about 15 mins from home in Clubview, called, Burger Bistro. Oh be still my beating heart is all I can say!!!
The milkshake menu at Burger Bistro is that old school paper number game
(I cannot for the life of me remember the name) with everything from usual vanilla to apple pie, Avo, Candyfloss to pineapple. (Ps: ALWAYS drink the milkshake second to activate and put it in your dessert stomach cause the burger is FILLING and I will bet that if you do it the other way round....you will be taking a doggy bag home, lol)
And then, there are those burgers....and those crunchy, perfectly fried chips! Burger Bistro gets it right with their burgers. Prices are fair, patties are succulent and everything is fresh. We have been twice in the last month and my spare time is spent thinking about their burgers....yeah...they are THAT good. The menu has something for everyone, from a simple plain burger, right to crazy yumminess with Strawberry, balsamic and black pepper jam (winner!!!)
A big part of what makes a visit to the Clubview branch so great is Donald and his team. Yes, being a food blogger does make me more picky with what I look at, but honestly I have no complaints. Donald is a hands on owner who has a fantastic team who very obviously have passion and want the customer to enjoy the visit. The decor is quirky, the venue isn't pretentious, its clean and it all just works really well. In short, I was seriously impressed at both visits (one at night and one for lunch) of both the food as well as the management and running of the place.
So, (and I suggest you don't take my word for it, but try for yourself) go on a date, or just shove a hoodie on and go slum it in the corner while nomming on a burger at one of the Burger Bistro Branches.
I can pretty much promise you that you will see, it's that place where you go, and then on the way home discuss what burger you going to try on the next visit!
Till next time, happy adventures
